There are six basic models of the Yawman &
Erbe reel. Size A, B, and C in the Key Wind models and size 1,2 and 3 in the Keyless or fisherman’s friend. I have seen
Loomis Plumb reels in the size 1 and 2 sizes only. The frequency of the reel sizes are: size 1 - 2 7/8 - 30% ; size 1 - 3
1/16 - 12% ; size 2 - 6% ; size 3 - 6% ; size A - 2 3/8 - 6% ;size A- 2 7/16 - 12% ; size B - 31% ; size C - 7%. Material
frequency is 79% aluminum, 7% brass, 3% bronze, 7% Nickel and 5% rubber.
The Brass and Bronze reels are difficult to
tell apart unless they are side by side, bronze is the material not the finish, Brass is yellow in appearance and the bronze
is reddish brown.
Philip Yawman bought the rights to Loomis Plumb about 1884, he made the first change in 1888,
I have not seen a Yawman and Erbe reel without this 1888 change but I have see Loomis Plumb reels with this update, it
is quite possible that the Loomis reels with; hinged brake levers, stamped foot and the updated gear system are the predecessors
of the version 1 Yawman & Erbe reel.
So far I have studied photos of more than 200 reels and
all my information is from observation, if anyone has some evidence that shows me incorrect let me know. Any information
you can add to this site would be welcome.
